To Purchase or Reload, That is the Question

Lee Reloading Supplies

The most serious gun enthusiast generally takes pride and ensures their firearm is kept in optimal operating condition. Cleaning, oiling, lubricating moving parts, and maintaining the external surfaces with varnish or bluing are reverently accomplished. The ritual maintenance ensures the optimal condition and accuracy of the firearm.

However, attention to the ammunition is a separate issue. Most gun owners are content to purchase premade and prepackaged bullets by the box. However, the avid marksman utilizing reloading supplies to make their shot is becoming more popular.

As one becomes more experienced in the technique of reloading, nuances in the reloading equipment used are identified. Ultimately, the reloader will want to explore options that improve the process and quality of the resulting rounds.

The three most common concerns related to reloading instead of store-bought ammunition are time, money, and personal preference. However:

  • The savings associated with reloading are significant, especially for the frequent hobbyist using quantities of shells. Recent estimates suggest that reloading supplies to create stock ammo can provide 33% to 50% savings over prepackaged boxes of bullets.
  • Over time, this can represent a significantly decreased financial burden. The savings can be funneled into another firearm, upgrading reloading supplies, or paying for shooting range time.
  • Conversely, many find joy and satisfaction in having personal input into every aspect of the experience. An analogy would be an avid sports car owner who performs all the car’s engine maintenance personally, as opposed to one that takes the prized vehicle to an automobile repair shop for routine work.

Brand New, Remanufactured, and Reloading: What’s the Difference?

Only the shell casing varies when comparing the difference between factory-made and making personally handmade bullets with reloading supplies. Every other component of the shot is the same.

Modern reloading supplies, equipment and application create a perfectly smooth and identical reproduction of a new case. They are indistinguishable in appearance and function when compared to store bought ammunition.

In addition, the reloader can modify the casing to meet a specific need or preference. For example, the slug can be narrower, shorter, or longer. It can also be modified to accept various changes in the other components.

Reloading Supplies are Key to Being an Independent Shooter

Reloading Supplies Online

Always be prepared by knowing how to load your own ammunition! Having a stock of reloading supplies and trusted equipment is the only sure-fire way of always remaining an independent shooter.

Here are five reasons why its the right time to start acquiring the reloading supplies, tools, and knowledge needed to reload your ammunition.

  1. Maintain availability.

By now, this one should be obvious to you. When the ammo shelves are bare, you want to still be able to grab a pound of powder, a box of projectiles, and primers to reload your own. Always having reloading supplies on hand enables you to reload your own whether you want to chamber obscure cartridges or common cartridges without depending on anyone else.

  2. You completely learn your guns.

It’s good when you read articles or watch podcasts about what others have said about your gun and the ammo you should be firing. But nothing will teach you more about your own gun and how you shoot it than loading and shooting your own ammunition. Knowing how your ammo works also helps you understand how your gun functions. Trying different reloading supplies is the way you learn how different rounds perform when you pull the trigger. It’s how you fine-tune to that last tenth of a grain that gets you consistently punching the center ten ring. Developing and testing your own loads is how you develop full reliance on your guns.

  3. Full control.

With store-bought ammo, the only control you have is with your shooting technique. There are a few variations, but these are still limited to the combinations commercially available. Reloading supplies in small batches is the inexpensive way to test bullet brands, types, shapes, and weights not commercially offered for your cartridge. Special loads have quickly solved a lot of problems for independent shooters. It’s about developing a load for a particular firearm that combines the magic balance of velocity and accuracy.

  4. A most enjoyable hobby.

Learning about and selecting the right reloading supplies to make your own ammunition is just plain fun, rewarding, and enjoyable. It is an ongoing learning experience. If your shooting is weather-dependent, reloading is a great way to relax with your hobby in the warmth of your home on a cold, windy, and rainy day.

  5. Affordability must go on this list.

Some factory ammunition (when available) is relatively affordable. But when it’s not widely available it becomes expensive. And some factory ammunition is always prohibitively expensive. If you enjoy shooting a cartridge in the ‘always prohibitively expensive’ category, reloading your ammo is the way to still enjoy your favorite shooting without breaking the bank.

It’s Up to You as an Independent Shooter

With experience, you’ll develop your own loads that all hit a dime at 100 yards by fine-tuning a specific powder and bullet combination. But do it safely by experimenting with the various load recipes listed in reloading manuals. You will quickly learn that you can build better ammunition than you can buy. And you can build it for a lower cost. Most factory ammunition is relatively good but still doesn’t compare to the accuracy that you achieve by weighing every charge of powder to the tenth of a grain for consistent pressure in every round that comes out of your gun. For low cost, factory ammo can’t approach that degree of fine-tuning.

Titan Reloading has the reloading supplies, equipment, and other components needed by independent shooters who want to enjoy their hobby in an uncomplicated way. Reloading is enjoyed by so many because it’s practical and enjoyable as well as affordable. Who can argue with that? Sometimes you’ll want to shoot stuff off just so you can reclaim the brass to try a new load. Nothing wrong with that.

6 Pieces of Equipment that Every Reloader Should Own

reloading supplies

If you are just getting into reloading, you will want to know what equipment to invest in. In this article, we recommend some essential reloading supplies that will serve you well in your reloading career.

  1. Press

You need a press in your setup. If you are just starting out then you will generally want to go with a single stage or turret press. Once you are comfortable with reloading then consider investing in a progressive press. The progressive press can complete multiple actions for one pull, making it much more productive.

  2. Powder

To state the obvious, you will need some powder. Buying some multi-purpose powder may be a good investment if you plan to load different calibers.

  3. Powder scale

This is used to measure each charge you are reloading. For peace of mind, you will also want to invest in an additional scale to check whether your reloading scale is functioning correctly. Most reloaders use a digital scale during the reloading process but also have an I-beam type scale to verify the charges.

  4. Reloading dies

Among reloading supplies, dies are some of the most important. You will need a set of dies for every cartridge you reload. Dies are caliber-specific and go into the press itself to do the work of decapping, resizing, expanding the case mouth, bullet seating and crimping.

  5. Case tumbler

Another essential piece of equipment is a case tumbler which is used to clean your spent ammunition casings. After cleaning for an hour or so your casings will look nice and shiny again.

  6. Reloading manuals

You will want to have multiple sources of load data from accredited publishers. Moreover, it’s always good to have some reloading books handy in case you need to refer to something or to simply refresh your knowledge. Modern Reloading by Richard Lee and the Lyman Reloading Handbook are some solid references to start out with.
